vida la vita.
-Jay had two very different experiences in Mexico, forty years apart -his first was in March, 1974, at the time of the Patty Hearst kidnapping -his Spanish was then "pretty pathetic"; nonetheless, he found himself in one situation translating between Spanish and English -on his first trip he went to Guadalajara and then to Mexico City -he returned to Mexico on his second in December, 2015: went to Cancún, Mérida, Mexico City, and Oaxaca -Cancún: in the state of Quintana Roo; found in not so attractive a city; only at the end of his time there, after visit ruins in Tulum, did he see the tourist/ beach area; day trip to Isla Mujeres -Mérida: beautifully laid-out, Colonial-styled buildings; Jay enjoyed his time there; day bus trip to Mayan site of Chichen Itza, UNESCO world heritage site, with many vendors all around the ancient pyramids -flew to Mexico City: ten days, including return to performing arts center; large scale Diego Rivera murals; Frida Kahlo's house, La Casa Azul; city's metro; large, largest collection of Museums per capita; passed by museums on the way to seeing a museum; beautiful monuments, parks, housing; easy to get around -outside of city, archaeological site Teotihuacan, with pyramid of the sun, pyramid of the moon -airport disaster: he was one day off, a day late; allowing camera repair and a visit to Museo Nacional De Arte MUNAL, the National Museum of Art -met up with a friend of a friend in Oaxaca; many expats living there, arty place -Jay's observations: 1 in 2015, racial identities were coming to forefront; most advertising had people of European appearance though it was indigenous people who were most often exposed to it 2 you can shop on the train, with salespeople walking through, ambulatory vendors -Oaxaca, lovely smaller town, with Zócalo, open square; town known for handicrafts -Vida la Vita (artsandculture.google.com), painting by Frida Coella embracing life; an image and life outlook that moves Jay acl5 in mexico pt1/2 et al. acl51 in mexico pt2/2 47 minutes 04-04-22 debug comment |
