jay has seen some amazing places.
-USA greatest hits -Jay loves cities for their walkability; density of available goods and services; ease of public transport; architecture, public art, art museums -his favorite cities: San Francisco (where he lives), New York, Boston, Chicago, Washington, D.C. -Chicago has a huge Picasso, Miró, Chagall, Calder sculptures -much of his travel is to visit friends and relatives, attending weddings -likes: Seattle, Philadelphia, Portland (OR), Minneapolis, Los Angeles (which is getting better with its public transportation) -many New York City subway stations have beautiful new mosaics -his modus operandi is to buy a 7-day public transportation pass -Jay keeps a spreadsheet of the places and things he wants to see: for the USA, for example, first column lists states alphabetically, second locale, third description -in SF, on the day before recording, he saw amazing brick work in the Amsterdam School style (Wikipedia.org); on the day of recording, he walked streets he had not before, saw murals he had not seen before -smaller towns, University towns, that interest him: Ann Arbor, Michigan; Madison, Wisconsin; Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Davis, California -Jay considers the North and South rims of Grand Canyon astounding; Yosemite and Yellowstone impressive and fascinating -Jay's travel began for one reason but continues for another. He was first motivated because he wanted to visit people he knew. He found that the first-had experience of seeing places he had before seen only in photos was amazing, and motivational. -Gateway Arch in St. Louis (gatewayarch.com), Washington Monument in D.C. (nps.gov/wamo) -No second-hand depiction of them could match being there himself; he wanted to get across gap of seeing the pictures and instead see the places in person himself. Jay was not hesitant in exploring and seeing far-off and near places. -He encourages listeners to visit new places and to meet new people. acl4 in the united states pt1/3 acl5 in the united states pt2/3 et al. acl53 in the united states pt3/3 49 minutes 04-18-22 debug comment |
