what makes a country?
-The Travelers' Century Club (travelerscenturyclub.org) recognizes not only countries but also confers to territory status places that are geographically or culturally unique -TCC considers (as of January 2022) that there are 330 countries and territories (travelerscenturyclub.org) -Alaska, Prince Edward Island, and Saint Pierre and Miquelon in North America -Hawaiian Islands one of forty in the Pacific Ocean -Transnistria (Wikipedia.org), though politically technically within Moldova and abutting Ukraine, is a region that considers itself apart, its own country -the TCC Countries and Territories map (google.com) -using former policy of TCC, Jay included an airplane touch down in Sudan as one of his 127 countries visited; and a walk around an airport in South Korea on a layover also -Jay's two times in Western Sahara were both very brief. An airplane touch down; a short visit when he was on the northern Mauritania coast -peoples' territory transcending countries' borders: movable nations. Four come to mind: the Hmong people, who live primarily in Southeast Asia (in the countries of Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam [and Southwest China, see below]); the Tuareg people in a number of Saharan countries (Libya, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Algeria); the Kurdish people in Western Asia (Iraq, Iran, Turkey); the Sami people in northern Scandinavia (northernmost Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula in western Russia) -a discussion of diasporas -as of the latest editing, 09-14-22, the United Nations had 193 member states -the Hmong people are indigenous to central China; many live in southwest China in addition to the countries listed above -"Five lifelong (and life-changing) lessons that you can learn from travel," Jay's article (Medium.com) 45 minutes 04-25-22 debug comment |
