some conversations with marc scm scm episodes scm36 why are you a singer/ songwriter? |
acting no, writing songs and singing yes.
-Marc came instinctually to being a singer/ songwriter -he was initially inspired in 2006 by Cat Stevens' album Tea for the Tillerman (Google.com), particularly the song "Where Do the Children Play?" (YouTube.com) -his first guitar playing was painful not just for the sounds produced but also for his fingers. learning the guitar hurts bones, forms calluses, and caused him excruciating pain on the tips of his fingers. by 2016, he had developed intermittent arthritic pain -Marc's deep belief is that life should not always be easy; if it is always easy one is not learning/ doing something; a belief he developed to counter his childhood nihilism (discussed at the start of scm20) -Mark was on the musical theater track at UCLA. he found himself drawn to the music, not so much the acting. a class with Peter Rutenberg (singers.com), in particular, inspired him; he had open mic performances in Los Angeles. -T. Rex (Wikipedia.org), 1970s glam hard rock band -Marc collaborated with his father, Peter Krey (wordpress.com) to create musical theater (referenced in scm1) -Marc was asked by others to stay in acting but his heart was not in it. Marc acted in two productions after rigorous auditions; he gives special thanks to Jim Goldner (Google.com) -Marc's experience [and his belief]: you have to have a high, high pain tolerance to be an actor -Marc had at same time "cafe residency" at Tribal Cafe in L.A. -he moved back to the SF bay area in 2012 to reinvent himself but was still prodded by others to try for acting gigs. in January, 2014 Marc did his last film, a student film, Kyle Gustafson's musical Love Laced Bullets (YouTube.com), Love Laced Bullets (Facebook.com) -in 2015, he became full-time singer/ songwriter, playing at farmers' markets, had side gigs -by 2018, got other jobs; his identity remained as singer/ songwriter -Marc released his album Sweet Famine (sampler on YouTube.com) -he a singer/ songwriter because he is a storyteller; he believes that stories were originally sung, and that stories are most effectively when conveyed with music -Sorry for the confusion: the some conversations with marc series remains a part of the LukeyoutheU podcast. I considered splitting it and tcs and acl as part of a Lukeyo series but subsequently decided against it. -It was Mahler's Symphony No. 5 (YouTube.com) that I meant to refer to 1 hour 4 minutes 03-31-21 debug comment |
